Dean Radin, PhD, senior scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, has recently joined EXPLORE as co-editor-in-chief. Dr Radin—author of The Conscious Universe (1997, HarperOne) and Entangled Minds (2006, Simon & Schuster), and author or coauthor of over 200 journal articles, technical reports, and popular articles—will be managing manuscripts that deal with mind-body medicine, consciousness, and spirituality.
“My interest in consciousness was originally motivated out of a child's intuitive sense that the mind is far more mysterious and powerful than we know,” said Radin. “Through education and experience I've also come to appreciate that these experiences are also responsible for most of the greatest inventions, artistic and scientific achievements, creative insights, and religious epiphanies throughout history. Understanding this realm of human experience thus offers more than mere academic interest—it touches upon the very best that the human intellect and spirit have had to offer.”
“Dean Radin's roots in consciousness research go deep,” commented Larry Dossey, MD, executive editor of EXPLORE. “I consider him the Einstein of consciousness research because of his penetrating insights, his theoretical grounding, his prolific output, and his ingenious experimental approaches. He brings a wealth of experience to EXPLORE, and he will help us fulfill our mission as a journal.”
Dr Radin earned a BSEE, magna cum laude, in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and an MS in electrical engineering and a PhD in educational psychology from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. While pursuing a scientific education, he played the classical violin in orchestras and quartets and the fiddle and banjo in bluegrass bands.
After working as a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories and later as a principal scientist at GTE Laboratories, he switched fields to follow his primary love—the study of consciousness. For the past 17 years, he has conducted experimental studies of psi phenomena at Princeton University, University of Edinburgh, University of Nevada, and SRI International, the latter as a visiting scientist on a classified program of psi research. Before joining the Institute of Noetic Sciences, he cofounded the Boundary Institute, a Silicon Valley nonprofit scientific research organization, and he was in charge of a psi research program at Interval Research Corporation in Palo Alto, California.
His awards include the Parapsychological Association's Outstanding Achievement Award, the Rhine Research Center's Alexander Imich Award for advances in experimental parapsychology, and in 2008 he was selected as an “Alumni Leader” by the University of Illinois' Department of Electrical Engineering. He has received grants from the Fetzer Institute, the Samueli Institute, the Bigelow Foundation, the Richard Hodgson Memorial Fund at Harvard University, the Bial Foundation in Portugal, the Parapsychology Foundation in New York, the Society for Psychical Research in London, the Swedish Society for Psychical Research in Stockholm, and the Institut für Grenzgebiete der Psychologie und Psychohygiene in Germany.
Dr Radin's editorial goal for EXPLORE is “to encourage serious consideration of rigorous empirical evidence and creative theories that challenge dominant paradigms, especially those concerning the nature and capabilities of consciousness. Such challenges are often uncomfortable to habitual thought and are easily dismissed. But they are also vital to advancing science and maintaining healthy inquiry, and that's what exploration is all about.”

Weil Foundation Appoints James E. Dalen to Executive Director Post

In a move that affirms the critical roles that integrative medicine and medical education play in health system transformation, the Weil Foundation has selected a national academic medicine authority and former medical school dean as its new executive director. James E. Dalen, MD, MPH, former dean of the University of Arizona College of Medicine, assumed the new position in April following the passing of the foundation's first executive director, Woodward Wickham.
“Dr Dalen was the first medical school dean in the country to promote the values of integrative medicine in academia, and many of the inroads we have made over the past decade can be directly attributed to his passion and hard work,” said Andrew Weil, MD, founder and president of the Weil Foundation. “The reform of medical education has long been the foundation's top priority,” he continued, “and Dr Dalen's leadership, experience, and credentials in academic medicine will bolster our efforts to change the way physicians are taught.”
Dr Dalen has been a member of the University of Arizona faculty since 1988. He served as dean of the College of Medicine from 1988 to 2001, and vice president for health sciences from 1995 to 2001. In 1999, he cofounded the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine and serves today as its senior advisor. Currently, he is professor emeritus of medicine and public health, and teaches in the Colleges of Medicine and Public Health. Dr Dalen received his doctor of medicine from the University of Washington, and his master of public health from Harvard University.
Founded in 2002, the Weil Foundation supports the advancement of integrative medicine through research, education, training, and policy reform. In 2008, the foundation awarded $670,000 in grants to organizations that share this mission. Approximately 90% of the donations to the foundation come from Dr Weil, who contributes all of his after-tax profits from royalties on the sale of retail products licensed by Weil Lifestyle, LLC.
According to the Weil Foundation, integrative medicine emphasizes the innate healing capacities of the organism; views patients as mental-emotional beings, spiritual entities, and community members as well as physical bodies; addresses all aspects of lifestyle in evaluating health and illness; places great importance on the role of the practitioner-patient relationship in the healing process; and makes use of all appropriate therapies.
